How does your child feel and think about school?

What are your child’s attitudes and beliefs and how do we find out? Their mindset and attitude will accelerate their learnings.
How they feel about going to school every day will affect their behaviour and performance during their school life.

Attitude is about we approach what we do and how we can stick at it until we get the result we want … it is also about the amount of effort we are prepared to put in … and ask ourselves is it worth it in the long term .. If the student does not have the right attitude toward school that will get in the way of enjoying school and their learning.

The question to ask your student/child is ‘What is the purpose of going to school? This will give you the base to start and understand how they are doing and liking or not school.

... It is said that a person with a positive attitude has a longer and happier life …

Environment; where they learn and study … the people around them and the value their family and friends place on learning … a quiet place, music etc …. The classroom they are in at school.
Behaviour; what is the behaviour they show, are they disruptive, inattentive or just can’t get started? Trying to learn but can’t because they either don’t know how or can’t concentrate in that environment.
Capabilities; do they know how to learn … you can try to be the best student and behave amazingly .. but if you don’t know how to learn, retain and recall information this is where it all starts to fall apart.
Beliefs & Values; What do they believe about themselves? Do they believe they can learn? If they thought of themselves as fabulous students, what would they believe about themselves and how would it boost their self-esteem?
Identity; How would they imagine themselves if they were a top student .. How would they feel about themselves? Do they know someone that is a top student they can mirror what they do?
Purpose; It is important that they student knows what being a top student will do for them and how things in their lives will change … if this is not clear there is no purpose to putting in the effort to get there.

Part of this journey is to remember we did not get anything right and perfect the first time we tried something new … e.g; walking, riding your new bike, doing somersaults, learning any new sport, they all need practice well the art of learning is the same. Unfortunately, we are not taught this most of the time it is just expected we know.
Research has proven that what you say affects every cell in your body, we can all beat ourselves up from time to time, the important thing here is we to the best of our ability keep how we talk to ourselves and what we say around others about our learning at school positive. All too often students do not say anything in some situations. i.e.; I didn’t understand that; I don’t get what the teacher is saying, instead have the courage to ask for it to be explained until we do, this is not encouraged from my experience, most kids that don’t understand are too embarrassed to put their hands up and ask.
Do not say things to your child or let your child say things like ‘that teacher can’t teach’ or make fun of something about that teacher. This is not healthy, and impacts learning and is setting your child up to being negative about school …

When children are sensitive to sound sometimes, they can think the teacher is always cranky because of the direct tone the teacher uses, it is important that children as early as possible start to learn about teacher styles and understand it is not always directed at them in a negative manner.
Some teachers are loud, some are softly spoken how does this impact your child? Some students can react badly in either of these situations, depending on their environments and personality.

Sometimes students can feel emotionally attached depending on the tone and expression used by some teachers. If this happens early in a student’s learning this can traumatise them for the rest of their school learning life.
