How does your child know what to do when they experience high levels of stress?

Are Parents and Teachers failing them at that time?

When children experience high levels of stress, it can have a significant impact on their ability to learn effectively. Stress activates the body's natural "fight or flight" response, which is the opposite to a positive learning state which can divert cognitive resources away from learning and towards survival instincts. This physiological response can hinder concentration, memory retention, and information processing. Sadly, this is what happens when children can’t learn effectively and start to panic internally.

Stress can also affect a child's emotional well-being, leading to feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, or frustration this can also lead no not wanting to participate in school activities and depression. These negative emotions can further impede their ability to focus, engage with learning materials, and effectively problem-solve.

Additionally, chronic stress can disrupt sleep patterns, appetite, and overall physical health, which can further hinder a child's cognitive functioning and overall well-being. Children may start to say, “I feel sick and not want to go to school”.

It is important for caregivers and educators to create a supportive and nurturing environment and sometimes in our busy lifestyles this can be a challenge. You don’t have to become a helicopter parent to help manage your child’s emotions, they need to learn with guidance what emotions are and how to manage them.

EMOTIONS AND LEARNING TO MANAGE THEM IS LIKE LEARNING TO WALK, IT IS A PROCESS.

The calmer you and your house handle all situations the calmer your child will learn to behave and do the same, children pick up on parent behaviours and the most formative years of a child’s life are according to Morris Massey - A renowned speaker and expert in the field of human behaviour and generational differences. Morris Massey is known for his work on understanding the impact of early life experiences and societal influences on individuals' beliefs, values, and behaviours. (*** see below for more information.)

0-7 years, IMPRINT YEARS
- where they learn trust of people and their environment, develop motor skills, start to take interest in the outside world, plants, people and animals. They start to learn about boundaries and their limits, about danger and consequences for their actions.
Before 7 children are mostly unaware of any difference between themselves and the parent. Food for thought .. the unconscious start of all their behaviour …

7-13 years, MODELLING PERIOD
– this is where they start to copy people and behaviours, the most important time to have good role models, both at home, friends and school.
Children start to look at their hero’s – it is said that around this age is when we decide what we want to do or be when we grow up and is often based on those around us and our environment. It’s funny but people usually end up doing or being some form of this as adults or are sad they never got to pursue their dreams and have regrets later in life.

13-21 years SOCIALISING PERIOD
– Your young adult child starts to pick up with other social values, this is thought to be a critical time of development because of who they make friends with and it is said, if you have a child who loves adventure you need to be a ‘better salesman that their friends’ in some circumstances, if they are choosing the wrong friends.

This crucial period usually starts in the first 2 years of High School. World events, media and what is taught at school also play a big part at that time.

*** More about Massey - He is particularly recognized for his concept of the "imprint years," which refers to the period from birth to around the age of seven. During this time, Massey suggests that individuals are highly susceptible to absorbing and internalizing the values, beliefs, and attitudes of their immediate environment, such as their family, culture, and society. These imprints can significantly shape a person's worldview and influence their decision-making processes throughout their lives.
Massey's insights on the imprint years have been widely applied in fields such as education, leadership development, and organizational culture. His work emphasizes the importance of understanding the formative years in order to comprehend individuals' motivations, preferences, and behaviours in various contexts.
